“They loved each other, not driven by necessity, by the “blaze of passion” often falsely ascribed to love. They loved each other because everything around them willed it, the trees and the clouds and the sky over their heads and the earth under their feet.”Doctor Zhivago (2002)

Inspired by [x], this is to show the range of roles that Marilyn Monroe played throughout her career and how she should not be judged on her dumb blonde roles, when her characters were so much more than that.
I disagree with the description of Lorelei from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes. She does not desperately want a husband. She desperately wants security, which came through money and husbands in the 1950s. Remember, diamonds are a girl’s best friend because they will pay the rent when those louses go back to their spouses.
Which is also to say, Marilyn never played a dumb blonde.
That caption is over Pola Debevoise in How to Marry a Millionaire. Pola was desperate for a husband. They spend the entire film LOOKING for husbands. Lorelei Lee is the top right. My point is that most of these characters come across as a “dumb blonde”, Marilyn was labelled as such, my point is that the characters were more than that.

I’m rightly tired of the pain I hear and feel, boss. I’m tired of bein on the road, lonely as a robin in the rain. Not never havin no buddy to go on with or tell me where we’s comin from or goin to or why. I’m tired of people bein ugly to each other. It feels like pieces of glass in my head. I’m tired of all the times I’ve wanted to help and couldn’t. I’m tired of bein in the dark. Mostly it’s the pain. There’s too much. If I could end it, I would. But I can’t.
The Green Mile today. It’s good to see a really good movie, time to time. Especially in such a sad day.
